TRNovice’s Climbing Training Diary

About the Author

My real name is Peter Thomas. TRNovice is an ancient web handle whose origins are too obscure to bore you with. It pre-dates me being interested in climbing and is definitely nothing to do with top-roping!

I have been climbing since November 2003, at first indoors and then venturing outside for sport climbing and trad (both in April 2004). The move to real rock was always logical as I had spent several years prior to that progressing through walking, hill-walking and scrambling. I like long easy mountain routes, maybe reflecting my hill-walking days. However, in the last few years I have probably done more bouldering than any other form of climbing; so I am also interested in finding out what my limits are in moving on rock.

I have climbed in many parts of the UK, including (in chronological order): Portland, North Wales, The Peak, The Wye Valley, Dartmoor, The Lakes and London (I am psyched about the newly installed Shoreditch Park and Mabley Green Boulders). I even spent one very wet day trying to boulder in the Trossachs. I have also climbed in France (Fontainebleau), Spain (The Costa Blanca) and the US (California, New York and Pennsylvania). My favourite rock types are slate, mountain igneous (in all of its varieties) and Bishop Volcanic Tuff.

I have limited natural ability and so training is important for me. Its something that I try to take reasonably seriously, at least when not injured (which I seem to have been for much of 2008).

I enjoy writing and have had a number of articles published in both the print and on-line climbing media.

I live in London with my girlfriend who is also a climber and has been actively blogging for a lot longer than me (see here).
